On request, a landlord must give the tenant a receipt for rent or other money paid in relation to the premises (Residential Tenancies Act, 2018, section 17).

What the Act says about receipts

  • On request, a landlord must give the tenant a receipt for rent or other money paid in relation to the premises (Residential Tenancies Act, 2018, section 17).
  • The Act does not list what the receipt must say. A receipt showing the amount, the date received, the period it is for and the address is good practice, and that is what this one shows.
  • The Act also requires the landlord to keep a complete, up-to-date record of rent and other money received, identifying the tenant and the premises it relates to.

This is a record of money you have already received. It does not collect or move any money.
